Timeless vs. Trendy: How To Create A Classic Yet Current Home

When starting the process of designing your home, one of the most important considerations you may face is whether to embrace timeless interior design or lean into current home design trends. At Vermilion Interiors, we believe there are certain design elements that will never go out of style, and we always recommend these classic details over fleeting, trendy styles. Striking the perfect balance for us often involves mixing timeless elements, such as architectural details, classic finishes, and quality furniture, with trendy accents that can easily be swapped out as styles evolve over time.

What defines timeless design?

Timeless design is rooted in principles that remain stylish and functional regardless of passing trends. Quality craftsmanship is a cornerstone of timeless design, as well as classic architectural details, like crown molding, wainscoting, and arched doorways. By prioritizing these foundational design principles, a timeless interior serves as the perfect canvas for incorporating personal style while allowing trendy accents to come and go with ease. Small changes, like swapping out decor, textiles, or accents, can refresh the space without requiring a complete redesign. Timeless interiors have a grounding effect as well! They feel steady and enduring, rather than transient or trendy, providing a sense of familiarity and charm that just gets better with age.

Finishes and Materials That I Always Come Back To

I believe timeless interiors are defined by thoughtful selections that withstand the test of time. When it comes to finishes, classic materials and quality craftsmanship lay the foundation for longevity. Here are some timeless finishes that I return to often when designing for my clients.

Natural Stone Countertops

Materials like marble, quartzite, and soapstone are as classic as they are beautiful. No two slabs are the same, which gives a unique look and adds lots of charm. With proper care, natural stone countertops can last a lifetime!

Hardwood Flooring

Whether it’s rich walnut or soft oak, authentic hardwood floors age gracefully and complement a variety of design styles. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring does not have the same character that real hardwood floors bring to a space, so I always recommend hardwood flooring whenever possible.

Balancing Timeless and Trendy Wall Treatments

Soft, subtle paint colors create the perfect backdrop that allows for flexibility in decor. Here is where trends come in–experimenting with bold wallpaper in a powder bath is an opportunity to play with a fun, eclectic look without overpowering your main living area. Grasscloth wallpaper is a favorite of mine for a beautifully textured, enduring option. Of course, molding details are a classic design element that will never go out of style!

Unlacquered Brass and Aged Metals

I love mixing metals in a space, and I always recommend hardware and fixtures in timeless finishes. Unlacquered brass and polished nickel develop a rich, lived-in look, and are perfect in kitchens, bathrooms, and even design accents.
