Just outside Naperville, this spacious 2500+ square ft. community clubhouse was awaiting a transformation. We were contacted by a former residential client to see if we could take this clubhouse from its tired, worn, dated look to something modern, transitional. A commercial design project within a residential subdivision, we jumped at the opportunity to update this clubhouse and turn it into a welcoming community gathering space for the families and friends of the Homeowners Association (HOA).
Brightened Fireplace
The existing limestone was brought back to life with a whitewash and a new wood box beam mantel to bring a little edginess and warmth, offsetting the brick.
Furnishings that Perform Under Pressure
We selected tailored furnishings and upholstery that complemented one another and came together to achieve balance and visual appeal while being easy to clean and durable enough to withstand plenty of use.
Modern Matte Chandeliers
The existing hard-wired lighting plan worked for this space, but we replaced the dated chandeliers with modern, black matte finish chandeliers which elevate the mood. We layered in simple black matte candelabras that are timeless, simple, and classy.
Window Treatments
Hanging from a black matte, transverse rod, the new floor to ceiling window treatments can be easily drawn to allow for light control, or opened to let in the natural sunlight. We love the linen-like look of this fire-rated synthetic fabric.
From function to flow, every piece of this clubhouse was intentionally and thoughtfully designed to feel welcoming and inviting for families, friends, and guests.
“The subdivision clubhouse was stuck in the 1990s. With dark, dated, worn-out furniture and heavy burgundy window treatments, it was a poor reflection of their community. Some HOA board members considered updating it on their own. I’m glad they took my advice and hired Melissa. Melissa was so easy to work with. She was responsive and patient and took charge of this project. The clubhouse now looks incredible. It’s modern, light and airy with durable furniture and fabrics. The residents love the change and many are requesting to rent out the space.”

When redesigning this clubhouse, our goal was to make it adaptable for a wide variety of uses and to give it a broad aesthetic appeal, since we knew many would enjoy the space.
Rooted in a traditional design style, we brought in a transitional flair so it would be functional, adaptable, and meet the needs of anyone using/renting the space.
As a rental space, it was also important to ensure the furniture and sourced materials could perform well and withstand wear and tear (in commercial design, more durability is usually required than in residential spaces). We chose contract-grade materials that could be easily cleaned. Additionally, the furnishings needed to be easily moved for various room setups, so the weight and scale of furniture pieces was of utmost importance.
Other areas in the space that were in desperate need of an update were the fireplace which served as the room’s focal point and window treatments that allowed for control of natural light.
After meeting with the HOA board members to deep dive into how the building was used and what they were dreaming of for the revitalized space, we presented our design concept and space plan options.
We showed the importance of:
We used a neutral color palette of modern beige with accents of blue and showed how furnishings could be used to marry the transitional and traditional styles together.
Then, we set out to select and purchase the furnishings, fabrics, lighting, materials, and visually-inspiring decor such as artwork and accessories. We worked within our client’s investment range and helped guide them to make decisions that mattered most.
Gone is the Tuscan decor that once adorned this space! The space has been transformed into a cheerful, refreshing, and warm space that’s polished yet comfortable for all.
