How to Bring Boutique Hotel Vibes Into Your Primary Suite

The magic of staying at a beautiful boutique hotel is all in the details. A belief of mine is that bedrooms should be designed to be luxurious in a way that feels comfortable and welcoming, complete with plush bedding and soft, ambient lighting, as we see in beautiful hotels across the world. But what if you could bring that same experience into your own home?

Transforming your primary suite into a boutique-inspired retreat is all about thoughtful details, layered textures, and an intentional approach to design. I am a firm believer that life is too short to spend in places that do not bring you comfort and joy—and what better place to start than your primary suite? Elevating this space is a simple yet impactful way to improve your quality of life, as a grounding, ambient primary bedroom suite sets the tone for each and every day.

But how do we make this happen? Let’s start with investing in our bedding.

Luxury boutique hotels are known for their dreamy, cloud-like bedding that adds comfort and sophistication. To achieve this at home, start with high-quality sheets in breathable, natural fabrics like cotton or linen with a high thread count. Layer in a plush duvet, a cozy throw, and a mix of throw pillows in different sizes for that inviting, curated look. Standard pillows (20” x 26”) are ideal for sleeping and make a wonderful base for layering. Use two for a Queen bed and three for a King. Euro pillows (26” x 26”) add height and structure. Place two or three against your headboard (depending on the size of your bed), for a plush, hotel-inspired look. A long lumbar pillow or a cylindrical bolster pillow at the front of the bed adds a refined finishing touch.

Are you using harsh overhead lighting in your bedroom?

Lighting is a key element in setting the mood of a space… especially a space like a bedroom! One of the easiest and most effective ways to elevate the look and feel of your primary suite is to swap out those overhead lights with soft, layered lighting. This can take on many forms, including sconces, stylish table lamps, or even a statement chandelier (preferably, all three!) Warm, ambient lighting instantly adds a sense of relaxation—perfect for winding down after a long day. If you want to take it a step further, consider adding dimmable lights or smart bulbs to create a customizable atmosphere that shifts with your routine.

Extend the luxury beyond your bed.

One thing luxury, boutique hotels do well is incorporating spaces beyond the bed to lounge and unwind. If you have room, add a plush armchair, a small bench at the foot of the bed, or even a cozy reading nook. This instantly makes your bedroom feel like a private retreat rather than just a place to sleep.

Don’t forget to set your space apart with thoughtful art and curated decor.

One of my favorite ways to bring a truly custom feel into a bedroom is selecting a statement piece of art. Every surface in your space is an opportunity to incorporate sculptural decor, elegant vases, and personal touches to create a layered, intentional look.

Your primary suite should be more than just a place to sleep. This space should invite comfort and relaxation in a way no other space can! Transforming your primary suite into a boutique hotel-inspired retreat is all about the details. By incorporating intentional design elements, soft layered lighting, and rich textures, you can create a space that feels as beautiful as it looks.

Life moves fast, and we so often pour into others before ourselves. But your home, especially your primary suite, should pour back into you.
